Apollinaris

UNAA-01 "Apollinaris" was activated on December 2nd, 2001. This new creation was brought into being for the first true steps toward a Martian landing and the eventual colonization of the red planet. Similar to the setup for the international space station, this project was made into a joint effort between nations around the world and was being developed and handed by the United Nations Aerospace Association, which was created for this project. The UNAA drew from minds across the world, and works in close proximity with NASA and shares many of their facilities. Apollinaris was designed to be best suited to the environment she was planned to live her life in. However, rather than building an oversized mars rover, it was decided to build this robot using the replicant model of construction so that she would be better suited for working in close proximity with astronauts and eventual colonists.

After her completion Apollinaris went through a long serious of rigorous training and education classes. (Unlike more simplistic robots, this type of robot must be taught by traditional means, as directly implanting knowledge will often destabilize the robot, causing mental problems and erratic behavior.) During this time she was drilled constantly in all areas she would have to handle, piloting, physics, astronomy, geology, etc. During this time Apollinaris grew very close bonds with the small team that worked with her.

Unfortunately the Rikti invasion greatly changed her fate. When the invasion struck the future of the planned launch was suddenly in question as nations no longer wished to find the project, and the wisdom of colonizing the planet in a universe that now not only had proof of alien life, but hostile life, was called into question. Later the project was mothballed for an undetermined amount of time. However by this time a large amount of funds had been put into a program which resulted in a robot which now had no immediate use. Since Apollinaris was built as a multi-national effort, she could not be used by any one nation for their own unique uses. It was therefore decided to have the new replicant apply her skills as a hero, since super-villains and their like are a common threat to every nation that funded the project, and in this new capacity it keeps any one nation have direct control over her actions.

Apollinaris' mind is young, that's the best way to put it. While she knows everything she's been taught (Astronomy, Navigation, Piloting, Geology, Physics, etc.) and trained for she lacks social experience with other people. All of her life has been spent with various groups of scientists and training. While she's pleasant enough (The scientists aren't machines after all.) she's a bit naive on how people act outside of what she's used to. That is she has a hard time picking up on idioms, people's feelings, and has experience similar to a child that hasn't interacted outside their immediate family.

Apollinaris has a preference to night time as opposed to the day. She was designed to be at ease with the blackness of space in what would be a long voyage to Mars. Also this gives her chance to look at the stars in the night sky. She longs to be in the heavens among the stars, to see things none other alive has seen. She regards space as her home, and the night sky makes her feel a bit closer to it. The celestial bodies hold the same beauty to her that most people would associate with a rich blue sky with a few clouds, warm sunlight, healthy green grass, forests, placid mountain ranges, and other items of nature. If you were to ask her she'd tell you that the vastness of space is not a harsh environment at all. It's her environment and she's designed to find it comforting.

She finds more natural settings uncomfortable. While a city can create an artificial feel to make them comfortable enough she thinks a forest is a strange and alien place. Other settings such as deserts, rocky areas, tundra, and other environments that are often considered harsh and barren but are common on the moon, Mars, and asteroids are also places she finds comfortable. She has an intense dislike of insects, and the noises that animals make disturb her. Most feared after insects are the rest of the arthropod family, such as crustaceans. Plants aren't so bad but when in large groups they make her uneasy since usually there is something hiding in them. Apollinars' idea of plants is little hydroponics shrubs
